About NAMI York Adams Counties PA

Our History

What we know today as NAMI York-Adams Counties PA began as a local affiliate of NAMI Pennsylvania as Mental Illness Needs Devoted Support (MINDS) in 1984. Our organization has undergone several name changes over the years as terminology regarding mental health has evolved. The NAMI York County office was established when our first full-time Executive Director began in 2007, and a part-time Program Specialist position was added in 2008. Through word-of-mouth efforts, billboard ads, and announcements in local papers, word spread about our support groups helping individuals and families living with mental illness.

As a volunteer-based organization, NAMI York County increased programming to meet the needs of the community. In July 2015, NAMI York County became its own 501(c)(3) and opened a very small office located in the York County Economic Alliance building located in York, PA. This office served our needs until December 2021, but as the country and county were emerging from the pandemic, NAMI York-Adams alongside our Board of Directors made the decision to move into a larger office at 35 South Duke Street in downtown York to accommodate our growing programming and staffing needs. This new office offered a conference room that accommodates up to 16 people and holds several offices. Today, NAMI York Adams Counties PA has a staff of four full-time employees alongside a wonderful part-time staff of PAUSE facilitators and volunteers.

We are immensely thankful for all our volunteers who give their time and talents to help others in our community and allow us to reach members of our community in need. Our wonderful, dedicated team enables us to live up to NAMI’s motto every day – “You’re Not Alone”. Together, we will break the stigma around mental illness and aid individuals living with mental health conditions in finding recovery.
